India Adoption Tips

It generally takes four to seven months to complete the pre-adoption process: adoption
dossier preparation, adoption study, CIS (Citizen & Immigration Services) clearance -- completed by ‘Children of India’ if you live in Ohio or by a local adoption agency if you live elsewhere. At the time of referral acceptance, you will receive the Indian required to adopt a child from India.

You may wait 0-12 months for a referral. At the time of a formal referral to your family,
you will usually receive a report consisting of a small photograph, the child's social history, and medical exam along with acceptance papers to sign.

After you have consulted with your pediatrician and accepted the referral, we then work
with you to complete your dossier. Once your dossier is sent to India, the documents are submitted to Family Court in India. The court process usually takes four to seven months before legal guardianship of the child is awarded to the adoptive parents.

Once the court order is issued in India, our India Program Specialists will work with you
to submit the appropriate documents to the CIS so that your child may be issued a visa for travel to the US. India requests only one parent to travel. Our staff is here to work with you to plan your trip; with extensive travel notes, phone consultations and travel meetings, you will be ready to go. In the event of special circumstances, ‘Children of India’ will work with you to determine the possibility of an escort.

You will travel to pick up your child, spending about a week in India.

You will be assisted while in India to complete any required adoption processes.

Legal custody of your child will be retained by the agency until the final adoption is
completed in the US. This is required by the law to ensure that the child will remain the legal responsibility of the agency. If the adoption is disrupted, the adoptive parent will be responsible for airfare of the child and an escort to travel to the child’s new family.

Post-placement supervisory visits by a licensed social worker are required prior to the
finalization of the adoption. All children must be adopted in the US.

Final adoption must be completed within 2 years period The adoptive parents are
financially responsible for all adoption costs.

We will help you every step of the way. That’s our promise and commitment to you.
